Communication with Urban Fairies

On his first trip outside this spring, my cat Miles-Smiles was rolling around in the grass in pure bliss, when he telepathically exclaimed, “Everything is so ALIVE!”  While my mostly indoor cat friend was connecting with the life busting out of the spring grasses I was able to briefly see the world through his eyes and remembered that our world IS ALIVE. In hindsight this may seem silly, but for most of my life, I held the belief that to connect with nature, I had to be IN nature, and far away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. But watching my cat friend rolling in bliss on a small patch of grass on our city lot, with traffic rolling by and air planes overhead, I was able to see the abundance of nature all around me in a new light.

I have seen and interacted with fairies and nature spirits my whole life. My childhood home was surrounded by forest, wildlife and fairies.  As a child I had hours to myself exploring the wonders the land and nature had to offer.  Growing up on such magical land I learned to see the conscious and intelligent life within nature.  These life forces within nature helped me learn to listen and be a part of the rhythms of the seasons. I learned to talk with the essences of plants and trees and how to understand life as a great cycle.

During my early explorations with the land and the woods I was learning directly from nature herself about intuition, discernment and spirituality. Above all I learned to listen to the subtle worlds and energies and how to communicate with nature using my heart and soul. As an adult I am still learning to put into practice these early lessons from my first teachers.

Looking Deeper

I have heard that our outer landscape reflects our inner soul landscape. Living in the city, I am surrounded by cars, and telephone lines and concrete, but when I look deeper, I am also surrounded by a hidden magic that finds ways to thrive even when we humans do our best to stomp it out.
After being able to see my city lot through the eyes of my cat friend, I am learning to visit and talk with fairies, trees and nature that share my home and property here in the city. These fairies are different, but no less magical, than the ones I knew as a child.

When I look deeper at my surroundings, I see dandelions who are learning how to survive and thrive living in the cracks in the concrete, which in the end, are really not much different than us city folk.

Connecting with Urban Fairy Folk Exercise

Have a walk in your neighborhood and go on a treasure hunt for nature. Give yourself permission to take your time and look at your surroundings with new eyes. With each element of nature you find, be it bugs, trees, weeds, pine cones or even small patches of grass, send it love. Show it you care by offering this element an outpouring of authentic gratitude from your heart and soul.
With each ounce of gratitude you send to the natural world around you, you are creating a bridge between yourself and nature. Soon enough, you may even begin to hear, see or feel the intelligent life within nature sending love back to you.
