La Loba has been stalking me in dream time

La Loba has been stalking me in dream

She started appearing in dreams months ago.  She stands just behind me, to my right and whispering in my ear, telling me it is time to get to work. As she whispers, woven between her words and within breath she shares her unspoken stories layer with wisdom and maps to inner resourcefulness.

Night after night, deep in dream time, while my regular dreams unfolded, there she stands, to my right whispering into my ear, telling me it was time to get to work collecting bones.

La Loba is a bone collector and soul weaver

I first heard the tale of La Loba, in Clarissa Pinkola Estés's book, "Women who run with the wolves". The tale tells of La Loba, a wise old woman who is a collector of bone and soul. When night falls La Loba scours the land, mountains, dry rivers and deserts looking for the misplaced, forgotten and discarded bones belonging to women's souls, spirits and untended psyches.

La Loba, specializes in the collecting and preserving that which is in danger of being lost to the world.

When she has gathered up the bones, she brings them home to her camp, and places them softly on the Earth near her fire. When she has enough bones, she will sing, drum and breathe life back into them. As she sings, her words weave life back into the bones.  As she drums, the rhythm of her drum pluses reform and steady the heart. And between songs, she breathes life back into the bones.

Until, the bones spring up from the desert floor and form skin, and hair, and fur forming the body of a fully formed wild wolf.

The wild, savage, mystical and magical re-birthed wolf, then runs off into the landscape and by ray of moon or splash of sun, the wolf is transformed into a laughing wise women who runs freely towards the horizon.

Tending to that which we have forgotten, left-behind and given away

For months now, deep in dream time, La Loba has been teaching me about the parts of ourselves we underfeed, forget, discard and even out right give away.  In shamanism, this is often referred to as soul loss, in which we become separated or fragmented from vital aspects of our gifts, soul, or connects with Earth or Spirit. I know this work well, both as a receiver and giver of this care.

But as La Loba nudges me, each night to move forward, closer and deeper to helping her do her work, I found myself resisting. Resisting, not out of fear, not out of uncertainty nor because I know the work is hard. It is because I know, it is also time to teach others to do it for themselves, to learn to collect and tend to their own soul's bones.

Finally late one night, deep in dream time, I gathered my courage, my steadiness and passion and I turned to La Loba. Looking directly at her at her kind and weathered face, and thinning grey hair and spoke to her.

The words flowed from my heart and mind so quickly, as I shared with her, "Yes, it is important to gather soul-bones. But to truly preserve that which is in danger from being lost from this world, it seems equally vital to teach women to gather their own forgotten and given away soul-bones. As today more than ever, we need to remember how and to re-learn to sing life back into our own soul-bones, to re-learn how to integrate our soul and gifts of heart, intuition and spirit our their lives, to rebuild our communities, families and world. And equally vital so, we can then teach our daughters and sons the importance of nourishing, feeding and tending their soul bones from the start, so those souls fresh to this world will learn, they never have to give away their soul-bones to be smart, loved and included.

La Loba paused.

She paused night after night for nearly a week standing within sight of me, dream after dream, but never talking.

Then finally she spoke.

"Yes.", she said. "We must get to work."

And to work we went.
