You’re so aware that every day, every moment, with your pet is a gift. Especially now that your pet is aging, and it’s impossible to ignore that they won’t be here forever.
Here are 10 questions to ask them so you can understand what they need in this stage of life and let them know you’re listening.

With each of the animals I’ve cared for, when I start noticing a little more gray in the eyebrows, or when a once-ferocious appetite starts to wane… that’s when I have a ton of questions to ask them.
In this stage of a pet’s life, it can be too easy to become so focused on what might be coming that we miss the chance to just be present with them and love them in the now. Here are 10 questions to ask your pet to help you slow down and focus on what they want to tell you about making this final chapter together everything they want it to be.

How do you feel in your body?
How do your joints feel on walks, when you play and jump?
How are you sleeping?
What kinds of accommodations would you like as your body ages?
As your activity levels change, is there anything you'd like to do differently to feel more fulfilled?
What do you need to feel safe and supported in this stage of your life?
What is on your bucket list?
Can you tell me what it means to you to be an elder?
What questions or requests do you have to prepare for the end of life?
What do you need most from me at this stage of your life?
Even if you’re intuitive, sensing your pet’s answers to these questions can be a challenge
It’s always harder to hear your own intuitive voice—and the voices of your pets—when emotions run high, and your heart aches as you see your beloved friend enter into their threshold years, which can easily color your interpretation of their messages.
This is why I believe having the support of an animal communicator in times like these can be so helpful.

Every elder pet has their own unique hopes, feelings, and desires for this stage of life. There isn't one universal experience of aging for pets—just as there isn't for us.
