Adopting an animal rescue? Here’s how to set them up for success from the start

Animal communication can help both you and your new pet get off on the right paw… from the very start.

In this post I’m sharing how - and when - to invite your newly adopted pet to open up about what they need for a smooth transition.

Listen along here…

Hello Dear Intuitive One,

Have you ever had the experience of looking into the eyes of an animal at the shelter or on PetFinder and getting the gut knowing that they are THE ONE?

It’s like your intuition guides you right to the animal at the shelter who is the best match for you…  And when it’s a love match, chances are you’ll feel it in your whole body, in your heart and soul.

Animal communication is in the same neighborhood as this kind of intuitive knowing… but it’s much more detailed and conversational between us and the animal friend.

Animal communication is about having an intuitive conversation with an animal friend — giving you the chance to ask big important questions like how they feel, what they need, and what will best support their transition into your home.

And when bringing a new animal into your home with an unknown amount of emotional  baggage, having a heart-to-heart to get to know them is a powerful tool to help them feel comfortable.

Animal communication is about giving you, the human, wickedly clear details about what your new animal friend is here to learn and heal in this lifetime and what they need from you so you can both grow and heal together.

LOVE at first sight

When my husband and I walked into the barn where our dog friends Raspberry and Whiskey were being cared for while awaiting a foster home, the second we looked into their eyes we knew they were coming home with us.  It felt instantly right.

These two big dogs had lost their person due to a sudden death. We too had a recent loss. Our heart-dog friend Bernard had passed away recently too. There was a powerful connection we could all feel… so much so that while loading them into our car to bring them home. I heard Whiskey share using intuitive animal communication, “Let’s heal our grief together.”

When it comes to the kinds of powerful relationships we have with our animal friends, I don’t believe in coincidence.

Whether it’s a fate thing or there has been some behind-the-scenes matchmaking thanks to our beloved on the other side -  I believe something, someone, or a kind of resonance has drawn us together.

I see it time and time again in my work…. Humans and animals working on the same issues from different angles.

Like apprehension felt by both humans and animals around strangers, or overcoming early life trauma that allows trust to flow. The issues may manifest differently in humans and animals, but there almost always is some kind of connection.

Animal communication helps you get to the root of these themes that both you and your new rescue animal share so you can work on creating a better life and relationship together going forward.

Unpacking emotional baggage

When you are adopting a new animal friend, I believe the BEST time to talk with your animal is BEFORE you even bring them home. After you’ve met them, but before they've crossed the threshold into your space.

It’s that magic moment which gives you the perfect opportunity to know the truest-them, and learn about who they are, what they want and need from this lifetime.

The second best time? Is when you get that gnawing gut feeling that they have something to tell you that you just can’t seem to figure out on your own.

When I’m talking with an animal there are several aspects of their personality I can converse with. The two main aspects are the everyday-self that eats, poops and is hyper-aware of the physical aspects of life, and then there’s the Soul Aspect that is hyper-aware of big picture stuff. Stuff like what they are here on Earth in this lifetime to experience, learn about and share.

In conversations before they cross the threshold into your life, I mostly tap into the Soul Aspect of the animal and it always feels like we are tapping into their to-do list for this lifetime. Like what’s in their emotional baggage, how they feel about it and what they need and want help with.

These conversations can tell you how to best support them in those first few days (and months) as they integrate, settle in, get comfy and start to unpack their emotional baggage.

These very first conversations are about getting ahead of the problems so they are less problematic

  • I’ve heard from new owners whose new cat friends had the chance to share in their first conversation that they have sensitive bladders so they were able to set their cats up for success and avoid problematic litter pan issues.

  • I’ve heard from new owners whose dogs have shared they have a fear or worry around big change to let their person know they were nervous about too much change all at once — the new owners were able to create a home environment and socialization schedule that allowed their dog friend to come out of their shell.

  • And I’ve heard horses who had to change homes and owners ask to have several visits with their previous owners, and as a result, poor behavior like biting and trouble loading into the trailer lessened after just a few visits with their previous humans.

It’s in these first get-to-know you conversations that your new animal friends are given the chance to open up, have a voice to share what they feel, need and want — and that is a precious Welcome Home gift.

Three questions to ask your new animal friend in your first animal communication session to set them up for success

These are the three questions I suggest you ask your new animal friend in your first animal communication session. These questions will help you set them up for success and make sure you are able to give them what they need.

1. Tell me about what you are here on Earth to learn about in this lifetime?

2. Tell me about what you are here on Earth to heal in this lifetime?

3. Tell me about what you need from me to help do the learning and healing you want to do in this lifetime.

Thanks for tuning in with me today,

XO

Joanna
