Why it’s so hard to intuitively tune-in with your own animal friends

Why Intuitive communication with your own pets is SO hard

If you have a hard time tapping into what your animal friends are trying to tell you, EVEN though you have a wickedly strong intuitive sense — stick around. Today we’re talking about why this happens and how to see it as a GOOD thing for you and your pets.

Blessing meditation to embody belonging: starts at 9:34 minutes

Hello Dear Intuitive One,

I recently reached out for a session from a peer to lend me a hand with Miss Kitty. She has been bullying her dog friend Whiskey to no end. For weeks now, I’ve had so many conversations with them and worked with Soul Work modalities for me to make sure I’m not adding to this unpleasantness. Yet the bullying continues.

I finally concluded that I’m too close to these two and too invested in the outcome to intuitively sense the situation clearly. It’s something that happens to all of us intuitive folks and, after nearly two decades of doing this work, I’ve come to believe that it doesn’t mean we are losing our abilities or that something harmful is blocking us, or that we aren’t good enough.  It just means we are too close to access the neutrality needed for our intuition to see the whole picture.

Image: A photo from before the trouble started! Miss Kitty, a black and white cat, and Whiskey, a retriever Rottweiler mix, laying close-ish to one another on the futon in our meditation sunroom. Occasionally they lie so close they are practically touching which is a BIG deal for these two frenemies.

I know that everyone struggles with this, but before I could comfortably reach out for intuitive support I still had to move through all the layers of resistance…. including my inner dialogue that would tell me, “I should be able to figure this out on my own.”

Oh, and then there was the resistance around not being sure if I was ready to hear what they had to say.

But my struggle to see the situation between these two normally semi-harmonious critters only grew. When I would tune-in, it felt as though behind every conversation with them was also a constantly shifting mirage where the intuitive answer was just on the other side of my next felt sense.

But the closer I got - the farther away and more inaccessible it became.

Have you ever felt this?

Here’s why it feels impossible to intuitively tune-in with your own animal friends sometimes:

  • You are too attached to the outcome and can’t listen with neutrality.

  • You are too stuck in your head and can’t hear your own heart over the spinning of your mental gears.

  • Your strong emotions of LOVE, grief, worry and uncertainty are temporarily louder than your own intuitive voice.

  • You’re out of your body - trying to scout out the answers or solutions outside of yourself instead of sensing inward to your own intuition.

  • You’ve been sideswiped by a bad case of the “shoulds” that are blocking you from your intuitive flow. As in: You should be able to figure this out on your own, you should have all the answers by now, you should be able to navigate past all of the reasons you can’t see clearly and just fix this situation!

Here’s how this is a good thing and what you can do to transform this stuckness from being a good reason to spend the day belittling your intuitive skills and yourself feeling bad into a win-win kind of situation.

Isolation for intuitive folks isn’t a good thing

Be it our introvert tendencies or our overactive empathic natures, It is too easy for intuitive folks to become tucked into our own self-reliant bubbles. And as important as it is to have the breathing space we need on a daily basis, isolating ourselves from 1:1 support and an intuitive community leads to burnout or, worse yet, a guru complex.

When we connect with other intuitive folks for support we are helping our animals as well as ourselves.

I can honestly say that I’ve learned so much from books and the mentorship and training I’ve been a part of. But as importantly, I’ve learned more from receiving from others. So much so that I consider all of the intuitive, tarot, astrology, resonance repatterning, shamanic and animal communication sessions I receive to be tax write-offs because they fall under “continuing education” for my business.

Through receiving sessions from others we are given permission to experience the work as a client, to have sacred space held FOR us, to feel the support and let our guards down to receive.

It’s also in this receiving that we are able to learn about what it is that we can’t see, sense, or feel because of whatever personal stories, beliefs or ideas that get in our way.

And lastly, and super importantly, receiving intuitive support from trusted peers helps highlight our B.S. and helps keep us stay grounded in reality. Connecting with others for intuitive support on the regular can feel so validating as it takes the dream-like nature of this work and brings it into tangible face to face connection (even over zoom).

Back to the saga of Miss Kitty and Whiskey

The peer I reached out to for support was beyond helpful in shining the light on an aspect of Miss Kitty's past that she hadn’t wanted to talk about with me. It was too scary for her, and in many ways was reflective of something I had experienced in my early life. Miss Kitty, bless her heart, didn’t want to burden or trigger me.  The intuitive support session was profoundly helpful to highlight these things that Miss Kitty and I couldn’t  address on our own. I was able to hear Miss Kitty's story in a new way thanks to the space that was being held for us.

And we were able to come up with some new ways of relating to one another going forward that are taking the pressure off of dog-friend Whiskey… which is exactly what this work is all about.

A blessing meditation to embody belonging

I’d love to end this post with a meditation in the form of a permission blessing for you. I invite you to place a hand on your heart and a hand on your belly to help you connect with whatever aspects of yourself that need to hear this blessing the most….

Intuitive one, you are beautifully unique and powerful.

I believe in you and this path you are walking. You are incredibly strong and resilient…

I invite you to feel into your body - using your hands on your heart and belly as an anchor - and give yourself a moment to celebrate you. Celebrate how far you’ve traveled on your path, the immense challenges and obstacles you’ve overcome and the layers of yourself that you’ve healed along the way.  Give yourself a moment to lean into your inner strength and resilience. It’s okay to celebrate it.

Along with honoring this strength within you, I invite you to tune inward and sense into any outdated stories, beliefs or “shoulds” you are carrying in your body that perpetuate the story that you need to walk this intuitive path alone. Let your breath soothe these vulnerabilities and burdens within you. Encircle this energy with self-compassion and kindness by reminding yourself that you belong in this world, and it’s within the loving, safe and sacred container that comes with connecting with other intuitive people, that you are safe to fully unfurl.

Thanks for tuning in with me today,

XO

Joanna
